The Story of Cashew
The story of the cashew begins in the tropical forests of northeastern Brazil, where the tree (Anacardium occidentale) grew naturally for centuries. Indigenous communities valued the tree for its delicious fruit, nutritious nut, and medicinal properties long before it became popular worldwide.
In the 16th century, Portuguese explorers discovered the cashew tree and introduced it to India, Africa, and other tropical regions. They planted it along coastal areas to help prevent soil erosion. Over time, the tree adapted well to the warm climate, especially in India's coastal states such as Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
What makes the cashew unique is that the edible nut grows outside the colorful cashew apple. The shell surrounding the nut contains a natural oil that can irritate the skin, so cashews must be carefully processed before they are safe to eat.
Today, India is one of the world's leading producers and processors of cashew nuts. Cashews are enjoyed as a healthy snack and are widely used in Indian sweets like Kaju Katli, curries, desserts, chocolates, trail mixes, and premium gift hampers. Rich in healthy fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, cashews are loved for both their delicious taste and nutritional benefits.
From the forests of Brazil to dining tables around the world, the cashew has become a symbol of quality, health, and celebration. Whether enjoyed roasted, salted, or in traditional recipes, every cashew carries a remarkable journey spanning continents and centuries.
